Pet Relocation

We all know pet relocation can be a stressful time for the owners and the pets alike. However seeking professional help can make the pet transport and relocation journey a lot smoother. When making a long distance move, always seek professional advice from your vet and a pet relocation specialist. Pet transport within Australia or international pet transport can be a very tricky and intimidating process, however at PETS we do this day in and day out and we can take care of all the details for you. We can guide you through every step of the way. Here are some simple tips to help you with your pet's relocation.

  • Plan your pet relocation well in advance. We understand that this is not always possible as you might be moving at a short notice or have other constraints, but the more time you have to plan the trip the better it is for you and your pet.

  • Consider the weather when you move, especially for a long distance or international pet transport. For example if you have a snub-nosed breed it is not advisable to transport them long distances in very hot weather as they can have complications with their breathing. Again planning the pet transport in advance and choosing the right time of the year will help greatly. You should always check the weather at the origin and destination before making the relocation. Most airlines do put live animal travel embargos in very hot and very cold weather to ensure the safety and comfort of your pet.

  • Choose the right type of pet transportl container for your pet. There are many different shapes and sizes available in the market and most manufacturers claim that their containers are suitable for pet relocation, but not all containers are appropriate, espeically for international pet transport. At PETS we can help you choose the most appropriate container for your pet or we can custom build one for you according to your pet’s needs. As a general rule your pet must be able to stand, turn around and lie down comfortably in the container. The container should have appropriate ventilation and construction to accommodate the size and weight of the animal.

  • If possible familiarise your pet with the travel container a few days prior topet relocation. Put some bedding and some toys in the container and have your pet sleep in it a few times to get used to it.

  • On the day of the pet transport, put some toys or an old T-shirt in the container which has your or your house smells on it, this helps pets relax.

  • Do not over feed pets prior to relocation. Like us, pets can get motion sickness during travel and with a full stomach it can become even more difficult for them. Try not to feed them on the day of pet relocation or give them only a light snack. Give them a nice long walk or have some playtime with them before they travel, this will help them relax. Give them plenty of water before they travel. With international pet transport, due to airline and quarantine restriction, food is not allowed in the travel container, however the pets will have constant access to drinking water during their journey.

  • Like people, our pets have different personalities as well, some get more stressed than others. They mostly respond according to how we act around them, if you are getting stressed they will sense it. It is important to keep your normal routine leading up to the day of pet transportation.
These are only a few general tips to guide you in preparation for pet transport and relocation. Please give us a call to discuss your individual needs. We can assist you with all your pet relocation needs - from export/import permits to quarantine documentation, container selection, vet checks, route planning and airline bookings.
